Shapland & Petter
1980s
Oil on Panel
The artist captures the flag flying over Shapland and Petter, evoking the sound of the hooter calling workers to their jobs. The Shapland & Petter furniture company has a rich history in Barnstaple, England, where it operated from the mid-19th century until 2009. The current Oliver Buildings, a Grade II listed site, were constructed in 1888 after a fire destroyed the original factory. Designed by William Clement Oliver, these buildings served as a factory, showroom, and office space and were notable for their innovative fire-resistant construction. They became a significant center for mass-produced Arts and Crafts furniture. Today, the Oliver Buildings stand as a prominent landmark and are listed among the Victorian Society's Top Ten Endangered Buildings, currently undergoing redevelopment for new purposes.
